Most people come to Nairobi to go on safari, but there is a lot to see and do in this capital city. Once a former watering hole of the Masai, it now offers visitors a lively nightlife, international restaurants, traditional cafés and bustling markets. There’s also the century old message tree at the Thorn Tree Café, displaying hundreds of notes pinned up by passing travellers. On the outskirts of the city, visitors can come face-to-face with giraffe at the Giraffe Centre and black rhino at Nairobi National Park. Or visit the Karen Blixen museum and learn more about her past in Kenya, which was immortalised in the Oscar-winning movie ‘Out of Africa’.
Mombasa is situated beside the Indian Ocean and is famous for its stunning white sand beaches. Here you can sit on the beach or by a pool in one of many spectacular hotels and watch monkeys steal fruit from nearby tables. Kenya’s second largest city is a major port with a diverse cultural history. Many of its traditions can be traced to former Portuguese, Arab and British settlers, who have all left their mark on the city’s food, architecture and people.
The Masai Mara on southwestern Kenya is one of the world’s most famous and largest game reserves. Masai Mara is on the Kenya side of the Serengeti National Park and is named after the Masai people. This massive ecosystem is home to one of the highest populations of lions in Africa and has over two million wildebeest, migrating zebra and Thomson’s Gazelle. Visitors who come here will also discover over 570 species of birds living on the vast rolling grasslands.
